Publication

The third edition codex was released in August 1999 in conjunction with new Eldar miniatures, notably the updated Guardians plastic set which remained in print for many years. As well as updating the stats and abilities for the Eldar faction, a concerted effort was made to emphasise the self-interest, arrogance and alien nature of the Eldar in the narrative setting compared to the previous edition of the game.

The book was published in black and white with 16 full-colour glossy pages featuring a model showcase, painting advice and tactical analysis.

Background

This book contained background information and fiction about Eldar culture, mythology, technology and weapons. Notably, it featured the plaque of Eldar runes acquired by Eleusis Mung, from which a great deal of human understanding of Eldar culture has been derived in-universe.

Hobby Section

The full-colour section gave advice on starting an army, a tactical analysis of the qualities of each unit featured in the army list and how to use them, and three battleplans to advise new players how best to use their army in the tabletop game.

A painting guide was provided with advice on how to paint Eldar miniatures in the style of the five main Craftworlds (Biel-Tan, Saim-Hann, Ulthwé, Alaitoc, and Iyanden). The same attention was given to the traditional colour schemes of the Aspect Warriors.
